I have always admired the sense of aggregation of ancient villages, where the nearby homes make you feel part of a community and where the heat generated in the home is shared and held in a kind of embraced architecture. Imagine this journey in southern Italy with the understanding that the spontaneity of those villages has a wise design such as models in applications of contemporary life housing with its current energy and environmentally sustainable issues.
A journey traveling through the Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Pantelleria, Apulia, or the island of Capri, in search of a common matrix that is the spontaneous recovery of ancient architecture, originally created by ordinary people without intervention of professional architects; is now the subject of attention by enlightened owners and designers of conservative restorations that highlight the original features.
These villages and their houses use local natural materials in their construction, thus reducing the cost of importing these resources. Some of the houses presented use, for example, the painting of the exterior whitewashed - not for aesthetic affectation but to reflect sunlight to hold the temperature indoors during the hottest months of the year. What is interesting is that these devices and natural materials such as stone, wood and iron, when used in the manner presented create a life and aesthetic magic of inspiration.
However, rationally analyzing the factors that contribute to the creation of such a balance can sometimes have limited effectiveness. Such as how to taste a plate of excellent local cuisine of this area without asking the quantities of ingredients. Each reader of this text may dive in the solar atmosphere of the images of these islands dreaming of a hot summer day, and the insistent song of the cicadas and could imagine falling asleep in the cool thermal ventilated alcove of a Dammuso then, waking up and refreshing their faces, with the water of the cistern coming from of the last rain storm.
